 Online vs. Television

Through the digitisation of the television industry, audiences have had to adapt to their rising control over what and when they watch TV. Some people, like Lily, thrive and welcome these changes by using their new found control to actively participate with other users.
However others, like Jess, that don’t use the internet frequently find that they are often left out of these new fan involvements.
The audience now has access to all types of new media and in turn have generated and shared their own content such as fan videos, graphics, posters, stories and much more.
The gap between the online user and the television watcher is growing and it’s a problem I frequently find myself in when discussing television with my own friends. Like Jess, I am currently studying web media and didn’t realise at first how much digitisation and convergence really impacted my own life and the lives of my friends. I think it’s important to note what these changes will really mean for the future of the television industry and what these will mean for their different audiences.
